Vaughn Elliott is a member of the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Force. Someone high up in the United States government has pulled rank, hand-selecting her to oversee security for a visit by congressional VIPs to the West African nation of Mali. Sage McNally, a career diplomat, is the political officer at the U.S. Embassy in Mali. As control officer for the congressional visit, she is tasked to brief Vaughn regarding the political climate in the region.
The two women are instantly attracted to each other and share a wild night of passion. The next morning, Sage disappears while running, leaving behind signs of a scuffle. Why was Sage taken and by whom? Where is she being held?
Vaughn’s attempts to get answers are thwarted at every turn. Even Sage does not know why she’s been targeted.
Independently, Sage and Vaughn struggle to make sense of the seemingly senseless. By the time each of them figures it out, it could be too late for Sage.
As the clock ticks inexorably toward the congressional visit, the stakes get even higher, and Vaughn is faced with unspeakable choices. Her decisions will make the difference between life and death. Will she choose duty or her own code of honor?

Beyond Instinct. This is an entertaining read and plot that moved right along and kept me reading.The attention to detail was very good, especially in the methods the characters used in extracting themselves from sticky situations.
For the most part I liked the characters, but at times thought Sage a little too whiny. Vaughn was your silent hero with a tragic past and believing she couldn't love again and feeling responsible for the death of her past girlfriend. I thought the two main characters rushed into falling in love a little too fast. I can somewhat understand the dire situation drawing them closer.
The supporting characters had scope and were likeable. The bad guys were also developed well and written with an eye to detail.
Overall, it was well written and the dialogue was believable. I would like to see a spin-off with the character of Justine taking the lead.

I really enjoyed the action and combat fight in this book. It keeps you wanting to read more to find out what happens in the end. Very written and the plot is believable.
This is my first Lynn Ames book and I loved it. The focus of the story is the action, but the romance is definitely there. Sage and Vaughn are endearing characters that you ache for as each deals with their own ghosts. I couldn't put it down and read it one night. A definite must read.
Excellent second read. You know that a book is great when one
returns for another visit. You will enjoy this book from beginning to end.
Barely put the book down until it was finished. Great new character Vaughn Elliott. Conspiracy and intrigue abounds. Thanks Ms. Ames for another masterful novel.
I liked the story and was intriqued , I wich that they would have dome more with the romantic part of the book. It is really short on the encounters and not really detailed at all about the relationship between the two characters and left it very open. Story line great the romance should be more

I really like this author's writing--glad I discovered her! She makes the story flow well without me being conscious of sentence structure or choice of words, as I am with some other authors; even ones I like. Just really pulls me in, engages me in the plot, in the well being of the characters. I will likely watch for more of her work to come out and read it asap )
